42 years after Bob Marley died, see what his grave looks like

Bob Marley was a legendary reggae singer, songwriter, and musician who died of cancer on May 11, 1981, at the age of 36. He was buried in a mausoleum in Nine Mile, a small village in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica, where he was born and spent his childhood.

The mausoleum is a simple stone building with a thatched roof and a red, yellow, and green Ethiopian flag at the entrance. Inside, there is a small museum that displays some of Marley’s personal belongings, including his guitar, clothes, awards, and photographs. Visitors can also explore a meditation room where they can listen to his music and feel his presence. The most sacred part of the mausoleum is the crypt where Marley’s body lies in a bronze casket along with his guitar and a Bible. Rastafarian priests guard the crypt and perform rituals and chants to honor Marley’s spirit.

In 2005, Marley’s wife Rita announced her desire to exhume his remains and rebury them in Ethiopia, the birthplace of Rastafarianism and Marley’s “spiritual resting place.” However, this plan faced opposition from some of Marley’s children, fans, and Jamaican officials, who argued that moving his grave would disrespect his legacy. Ultimately, the reburial plan was abandoned, and Marley’s grave remains in Nine Mile to this day.

Marley’s grave symbolizes his enduring influence and inspiration for millions of people worldwide who admire his music, message, and vision. It serves as a reminder of his humble roots and connection to his homeland. As he once sang, “Don’t forget your history; know your destiny.”
