LIFESTYLE: Five importance health checks for women
It is important to take care of your body. This women’s month we will be sharing the most important health checkups for women. By detecting diseases early on, they are often easier to treat. Read the following so that you know what is important while you lead on a healthy life.
The first is Breast cancer, women should conduct a regular self-examination of their breasts and immediately consult a doctor if they see or feel any changes. The greatest risk for breast cancer is age. Genetics also plays a role. Secondly, Cervical cancer, south Africa has a high rate of cervical cancer, as not enough women are being screened regularly. Screening can detect early changes in the cervix which can be treated and save a life. Cervical cancer screenings available include pap smear.
Thirdly, Colorectal cancer screening, these tests look for cancer in the colon or rectum by checking for tissue growths, called polyps. A faecal immunochemical test (FIT) should happen annually as it detects hidden blood in the stool which can be an early sign of cancer. The fourth one is doing skin checks, skin cancer is caused by the abnormal growth of skin cells that have been exposed to the sun. The skin should be examined at least once a month. Women with a number of moles should have them “mapped” to detect any changes.
Lastly, Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) also known as lifestyle diseases, are the biggest threats to our health and are caused by the way we live, combined with genetic, physiological, and environmental factors.
