Metro FM producer credits hard work for her Basadi award

Metro FM producer Phila Tyekana recently won an award at the Basadi awards.

Tyekana received the Entertainment Radio Producer of the Year Award at the annual event last Saturday in Johannesburg.

The awards, which honour remarkable women in the arts, rolled out the red carpet for entertainment royalty such as Kelly Khumalo, who won the Afro Pop Artist of the Year category, and Lwah Ndlunkulu, who won big on the night, walking away with the Artist of the Year and Song of the Year awards.

Tyekana, who was born in Mdantsane, produces one of the radio shows with the highest listenership in SA — The Touchdown, hosted by DJ T-bo Touch.

With a career spanning more than 15 years, Tyekana debuted at Metro FM in 2010 and has worked with seasoned stars including Unathi Msengana, Glen Lewis, Phat Joe, Mo Flava and many others.

Tyekana said she grew up interested in the lives of celebrities.

“I have always been intrigued by the entertainment industry and its influence, the celebs, what they did, what they wore, the music they released, what new TV show was out and who starred in it, which DJ hosted which show on radio, and so on.”

Tyekana said in most cases, producers were not praised enough for their work, so getting this recognition was a great boost.

“I took knowing all this more seriously than my peers for some reason, not as a starstruck fan but genuinely intrigued by the entertainment industry itself and yearning to be part of it. I felt especially drawn to magazines,” she said.

Tyekana said she did not expect to bag an award on the night, but was thrilled she won.
