“President, can I hug you?” Thuli Madonsela met Jacob Zuma
People can agree that the past few days were quite interesting and it is obvious that the moment that stood out was when former president Jacob Zuma shared a hug with former public protector Thuli Madonsela at a gala dinner.
There were a lot of familiar faces and there were probably people that the former president would not meet on a normal day. Zuma had a brief interaction with the former public protector, they were laughing and seemed like they were having a good time.
We understand that it is politics and we see leaders acting like they are friends when they meet in public. It is really hard to tell what the moment meant for Zuma and Thuli, they handled this very well because they showed maturity, they understood what was required of them at that moment.
As you will see in a short clip that was recently shared on Twitter/X, Thuli shared a hug with former president Zuma. People have already reacted to this and there were claims that the two are good pretenders.
It could be that or they just understand that they have to get over some things, there is time for politics. The setting required an atmosphere where there was no tension and these are people who understand this very well.
The good thing is that, the former public protector actually asked for Zuma’s consent, she asked if she could hug him and the former president agreed. This says a lot about their relationship as fellow politicians, she had to make sure that she did not cross any boundaries.
A lot of us would have expected Thuli to shake the former president’s hand, but the hug seemed more appropriate, especially for the setting. This is something that happens once in a while and there is bound to be a discussion that happens after this.
