SAD NEWS: RIP A South African top sport star and his friend were shot and died in a spot

Lindani Dube who was the jockey of the famous Dundee July horse, Alpha & Omega, who was killed on Tuesday in the Eastern Cape, the family is heart broken about the incident.

It turned out that Dube (27) was shot and his companion died at the scene. This jockey from Daggakraal, Amersfoort, Mpumalanga, made a name for himself by winning this year’s Dundee July Horse Racing. After the victory, he told Isolezwe that with R300 000 as a prize, he will buy a car and a cart to load his father’s horse, which he described as his friend. It was clear that he is going far in this horse race as he also came second in the King Cetshwayo July Horse Racing, which was in the same month in Mpangeni.

Last weekend he came out again from the same place in the race in Mkhondo in Mpumalanga. His father, Moses Dube, told Isolezwe that he is confused by the death of his son, who he described as having a future in the game and being kind. Explaining what happened, he said his son received a phone call inviting him to a competition that will be held this weekend in the Eastern Cape.

He left home on Monday to meet Nqaba Bandla who was going to ride his horse, known as Kusasa Aliziwa, which it turns out was also killed, had met in Pietermaritzburg.

“I was shocked and almost fell to the ground when I received a call on Tuesday at around 5.30 pm and was told that Lindani and Bandla are no longer in the world. The person who called me said that when they were coming back from the town in Mthatha, they were stopped by a car from which men got out and opened fire on them. It is said that my son and the his friend died at the scene of the incident. I still don’t have complete information. I’m on my way to the Eastern Cape,” said Lindani’s father.

“It is said that the son was driving. When I arrive I will go to the police station to find out what really happened. I don’t know how to explain the pain I am in with my family. I am crying for his three boys. They are too young to be deprived of their father in this way.”

He said if all the plans go well, they will hide him on Sunday in Mpumalanga. The Minister of Sports in KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba roared. “This incident is horrible. We are speechless. We offer our condolences to his father, Dube and the family, who helped this jockey become prominent throughout (this type of) game. We extend our condolences to his fellows. We have all lost,” said Mahlaba.

Menzi Buthelezi who is the chairman of the KZN Traditional Horse Racing and Breeding Association said: “He went far in this sport. He ended the dominance of horses like Nxakanxaka and others. May his family be comforted.”
