Born on November 6, 1978, in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa, her birth name is Unathi Fundiswa Msengana. At present, Unathi Msengana is 44 years old and belongs to the Scorpio zodiac sign. Her parents’ names are Sakhiwo and Nondwe.



Nkayi received her secondary education at Victoria Girls High School and later pursued International Media Studies at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. In addition, she studied Journalism and Drama at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa.


Being the first African to voice a character in Doc McStuffins, Nkayi earned accolades and received honours. In 2005, she received the Most Promising Woman in Media award at the MTN Media Awards.

Her career began with co-hosting Popstars in 2004 with Rowan Cloete. Subsequently, in 2011, she replaced Mara Louw as a judge on Idols, holding the role for over five seasons. Leveraging her journalism background, she secured a position as a producer on the SABC 1 show ‘Castle Loud’ after attending auditions.

Furthermore, Unathi has released several songs throughout her career including Mona Le, Make Me High, Only for You, Alone with You, Woman and Be Loveable.


On September 19, 2009, Unathi Msengana and DJ Thomas Msengana, exchanged vows in a joyous ceremony attended by friends and family. However, the news of their separation in 2017 surprised many, particularly their devoted fans.

During a television interview with eNCA, as reported by The Citizen, she openly acknowledged their separation, emphasising the importance of being in a harmonious space as a family. Additionally, the pair had two children together, a son named Sinako Msegana, born on 26 November 2004 and a daughter Imbo Msengana.
