J’Dess Channels Igbo Goddess Ala on New Seven-Track EP ‘ALA’

Nigerian singer-songwriter J’Dess has released a new seven-track EP titled ALA, a project that draws directly from her Igbo heritage and is built on live instrumentation. The EP explores identity, love, growth, motherhood, and self-discovery.

Inspired by the Igbo Goddess Ala

The EP takes its name and central concept from Ala, the Igbo goddess of the earth, life, and foundation. In a statement about the project, J’Dess explained:

ALA — earth. Life. Motherhood. The foundation from which everything grows. Inspired by Ala, the Igbo goddess of the earth and life, ALA is a seven-track journey through the things that ground us and the experiences that shape us. It is about love that nurtures, the lessons that come with growth, the strength of motherhood, and the gift of discovering your voice and allowing your talent to speak. Seven songs. Seven seeds. One story — rooted in where we come from, shaped by where we are, and reaching toward where we are going.

Sound and Collaborations

Across the seven tracks, J’Dess blends traditional Igbo folk melodies with highlife and soul rhythms, balancing live percussion with storytelling. The EP features collaborations with highlife duo The Cavemen., Waje, Zoro, Selebobo, Chigurl, and the Loud Urban Choir. According to the release, the result is a grounded soundscape that underscores her vocal range and reaffirms her place among the prominent female artists shaping modern Eastern Nigerian folk and soul music.

Visual Presentation

For the EP release, J’Dess styled herself in a full-length tiered raffia skirt and crystal corset, complemented by a towering locs headpiece, a cowrie shell choker, and an embellished corset, channeling the essence of Ala.
